Analytical balance calibration and precision balance calibration on-site
Repeatability, eccentricity and linearity tests with calibrated reference weights for analytical, semi-micro and precision balances in labs and QC areas.
What analytical balance calibration includes
Analytical balances read to 0.1 mg or finer, so draughts, vibration, static, temperature changes and levelling all affect results. Analytical balance calibration is therefore done where the balance is used, under its normal conditions, with reference weights of a suitable accuracy class.
Precision balance calibration follows the same tests with weights and test points matched to the larger capacity and coarser readability. Both are part of our weighing balance calibration service, which also covers platform scales and medical scales.
Before testing, the engineer checks levelling, the draught shield, the weighing pan and the environment, and lets the balance warm up. Internal calibration is noted but does not replace external calibration with traceable weights.

Why weighing balance calibration matters
Accurate preparation
Standards, reagents, media and API samples are all weighed. Balance error carries straight into results and batch records.
Minimum weight
Repeatability results help a QC lab set the smallest net weight that can be weighed with acceptable relative error.
Audit evidence
GMP, ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 15189 auditors check that balances have current, traceable calibration certificates.

- Environmental conditions at the time of test
- Measurement uncertainty for each test point
- As-found and, where adjusted, as-left results

How analytical balance calibration is performed
Calibration uses reference weights whose mass and uncertainty are known from their own traceable certificates, chosen in an accuracy class suitable for the balance's readability. Weights are handled with tweezers or gloves and allowed to reach room temperature before use.
For repeatability, one weight near the commonly used load is placed and removed several times. For eccentricity, a weight is placed at the centre and at off-centre positions on the pan. For linearity or error of indication, weights are applied at points across the capacity, from low loads to near maximum.
The report gives the error at each point, the standard deviation of repeated readings and the expanded uncertainty, so a lab can apply its own acceptance criteria.
How often is analytical balance calibration needed?
External analytical balance calibration is commonly done once a year, with more frequent intervals for critical QC balances or where your SOP requires it. Daily or before-use checks with a check weight, and periodic in-house performance checks, keep watch between calibrations.
Recalibrate after moving the balance, after repairs or if a check weight result falls outside your limit.
Keep each certificate with the equipment record, enter the next due date in your maintenance schedule and show both to auditors when asked. We keep a record of due dates for every client and can send a reminder before the next visit is needed, so nothing slips out of calibration between audits.
Calibration and Legal Metrology are different
Calibration under ISO/IEC 17025 tells you the measured error and uncertainty of a balance. Legal Metrology verification and stamping is a separate statutory requirement that applies to weighing instruments used in trade, handled through the Legal Metrology department and licensed agencies.
A calibration certificate does not replace Legal Metrology verification where that applies, and Legal Metrology stamping does not provide the traceable error and uncertainty data a laboratory usually needs. Check which one your use requires.
Precision balance calibration and analytical balance calibration are performed within the laboratory's NABL scope where applicable; ask us for the current scope for your capacity and readability.
