Incubator calibration for microbiology, BOD and CO2 incubators
On-site incubator calibration covering controller accuracy, chamber uniformity and stability, with CO2 checks for cell culture incubators.
What incubator calibration includes
An incubator's display reads a single sensor at one location. The rest of the chamber can be warmer or cooler, especially near the door, the heater or a full shelf. Incubator calibration measures the real conditions using several traceable probes and reports the difference from the set point.
For a typical microbiology or BOD incubator, calibrated sensors are placed at defined positions such as the corners and centre of the working volume. After the chamber stabilises at the set point, readings are logged over an agreed period to calculate display error, uniformity and stability.
Incubator calibration is often scheduled with hot air oven calibration, water bath calibration and refrigerator and deep freezer calibration. Where a full study is needed, see our temperature mapping service.

Why incubator calibration matters
Valid test results
Microbial growth, BOD tests and cell culture depend on holding the specified temperature, often within a narrow band.
Hidden hot and cold spots
Multi-point measurement shows whether every shelf is within limits, not only the controller sensor.
Compliance
ISO 15189, ISO/IEC 17025, GMP and food testing audits ask for calibrated incubators with traceable records.
Parameters checked in incubator calibration
- Display or controller accuracy at the set point
- Temperature uniformity across the chamber
- Temperature stability over the logging period
- Additional set points used in your methods
- CO2 concentration for CO2 incubators
- Relative humidity where the incubator controls it
- Door-open recovery behaviour (observed)
- Over-temperature alarm function where accessible

BOD incubator calibration and CO2 incubator calibration
BOD incubator calibration is usually done at the test temperature used for biochemical oxygen demand, commonly around 20 or 27 degrees Celsius depending on the method followed. Because BOD incubators have cooling and heating, both the controller and chamber uniformity need checking at that set point.
CO2 incubator calibration adds a gas concentration check. A calibrated CO2 analyser samples the chamber through the sample port and the reading is compared with the display. Temperature and, where controlled, humidity are measured in the same visit.
For each type, the report states the set point, reference readings, display error, uniformity, stability and measurement uncertainty, so you can judge results against your own acceptance limits.
How often is incubator calibration needed?
Most laboratories calibrate incubators once a year, while critical or heavily loaded units may need six-monthly checks. Recalibrate after controller, sensor or heater repairs, after relocation, or when daily thermometer readings disagree with the display.
Daily monitoring with a calibrated thermometer or data logger complements incubator calibration and gives early warning of drift between scheduled visits.
Keep each certificate with the equipment record, enter the next due date in your maintenance schedule and show both to auditors when asked. We keep a record of due dates for every client and can send a reminder before the next visit is needed, so nothing slips out of calibration between audits.
On-site incubator calibration and records
Incubators are calibrated where they operate, so there is no transport risk and the results reflect real room conditions. The incubator should be empty or at its normal load as agreed, and switched on and stable before the visit.
Certificates identify the instrument, sensor locations, readings, errors and traceability of the reference equipment. Work is carried out within the laboratory's NABL scope where applicable; ask us for the current scope for your temperature range. Read about our onsite calibration services.
