Refrigerator and deep freezer calibration for labs, blood banks and pharmacies
Multi-point temperature calibration of laboratory refrigerators, pharmacy fridges, blood bank refrigerators and deep freezers, so stored reagents, vaccines and samples stay within their limits.
What refrigerator and deep freezer calibration involves
A cold storage unit's display shows one sensor, usually near the air return. Items on the door shelves, the top shelf or near the evaporator can sit at different temperatures. Refrigerator and deep freezer calibration places calibrated sensors across the storage volume to show what stored material actually experiences.
A typical layout uses nine points in a chest or upright cabinet: corners of the usable volume and the centre, adjusted for shelf arrangement. Readings are logged at a fixed interval after the unit has stabilised with the door closed, giving minimum, maximum and mean values for each location.
Laboratory refrigerator calibration is usually done at the working set point, such as the 2 to 8 degree Celsius range used for reagents and vaccines. Deep freezer temperature calibration covers freezers at their operating set point, including low-temperature units where suitable sensors are available. Why laboratory refrigerator calibration matters
Product integrity
Vaccines, reagents, blood components and samples lose potency or validity outside their storage range.
Hidden warm spots
Door shelves and top corners often run warmer than the display shows, especially in busy units.
Compliance records
Drug storage, blood bank and laboratory audits expect traceable evidence of cold storage performance.
Checks in refrigerator and deep freezer calibration
- Display versus measured cabinet temperature
- Uniformity across 9 or more locations
- Stability over the logging period
- Warm and cold spot identification
- High and low temperature alarm function
- Door seal and gasket condition
- Compressor cycling behaviour
- Data logger or chart recorder accuracy where fitted
Units we calibrate

How deep freezer temperature calibration is done
Sensors are positioned in a fixed pattern, with cables routed so the door seal is not compromised. The unit is closed and allowed to recover, then readings are logged for an agreed period. The report shows each location's values, the overall spread and the difference between the display and the measured mean.
Results are recorded as found. If the display offset or controller is adjusted, the test is repeated and recorded as left. Alarm checks are carried out where they can be triggered safely without risking stored material. For larger cold rooms and longer studies, temperature mapping is more suitable.
Refrigerator and deep freezer calibration is done on-site, usually with the unit in service, so stock does not need to be moved. References are traceable to national standards, and work is performed within the laboratory's NABL scope where applicable; ask for the scope if needed.
How often refrigerator and deep freezer calibration is needed
Most laboratories and pharmacies schedule refrigerator and deep freezer calibration once a year. Units holding blood components, vaccines or critical reagents may justify shorter intervals under your quality policy. Recalibrate after compressor, sensor or controller repair, or after relocation.
Daily temperature logging by staff does not replace calibration, because the logging thermometer itself needs to be accurate. Include standalone thermometers and data loggers in the same calibration visit. Good practice between visits includes keeping units away from heat sources, avoiding overloading that blocks air circulation, defrosting freezers as recommended by the manufacturer and recording any alarm events with the action taken.
Each report lists sensor positions, set point, readings, uniformity and stability results, alarm checks, reference equipment, environmental conditions and remarks.
Keep each certificate with the equipment record, enter the next due date in your maintenance schedule and show both to auditors when asked. We keep a record of due dates for every client and can send a reminder before the next visit is needed, so nothing slips out of calibration between audits.
