RTD and thermocouple calibration for process, pharma and laboratory sensors

Comparison calibration of Pt100 RTDs, thermocouples and sensor-plus-indicator loops, with traceable certificates for audits and process control.

RTD and thermocouple calibration compares a temperature sensor's output with a calibrated reference thermometer while both are held at the same stable temperature in a liquid bath or dry block calibrator. The deviation at each test point is recorded with its measurement uncertainty, so you know how far the sensor reading is from the true temperature across its working range.

What RTD and thermocouple calibration covers

Temperature sensors drift. Thermocouples age through oxidation and contamination of the wires, and RTDs shift after mechanical shock, vibration or overheating. Because the reading still looks plausible, drift is rarely noticed until a product, sterilisation cycle or test fails. Regular RTD and thermocouple calibration exposes it.

We calibrate the sensor alone, or the sensor together with its indicator, transmitter or controller as a loop. Loop calibration shows the total error the operator actually sees on the display, which is often what an auditor wants to review.

Sensor work is part of our wider temperature calibration service, alongside temperature indicator and controller calibration.

Why temperature sensor calibration matters

Process control

Ovens, autoclaves, reactors and cold rooms are controlled by these sensors. A small error moves the whole process.

Validation data

Sensors used for autoclave validation and temperature mapping must be calibrated before and after the study.

Traceability

GMP, ISO/IEC 17025 and food safety audits expect each critical sensor to have a traceable certificate.

How RTD and thermocouple calibration is done

Calibration is by comparison. The sensor under test and a calibrated reference probe are inserted together into a stirred liquid bath or a dry block calibrator. At each test point the system is allowed to stabilise, then several readings are taken from both and averaged.

Test points are chosen to cover the range you actually use, for example a low, mid and high point, or the specific set points of a process. For thermocouples, the reference junction compensation of the readout is part of the measurement, so the instrument used in service matters.

Immersion depth, stabilisation time and stem conduction all affect results, so short or bent probes need a suitable setup. The report records the conditions used along with errors and measurement uncertainty.

How often should temperature sensors be calibrated?

Most sites calibrate critical RTDs and thermocouples every six to twelve months. Thermocouples used at high temperatures, or in harsh atmospheres, often need shorter intervals or replacement, because their error can change with use and cannot always be corrected.

Validation probes are typically checked before and after each study. Any sensor that has been dropped, overheated or replaced should be calibrated before it goes back into use.

A sensor register with tag numbers, ranges and due dates makes RTD and thermocouple calibration easier to plan across a plant or hospital.

Keep each certificate with the equipment record, enter the next due date in your maintenance schedule and show both to auditors when asked. We keep a record of due dates for every client and can send a reminder before the next visit is needed, so nothing slips out of calibration between audits.

Calibration records and NABL scope

Each certificate identifies the sensor, its readout if calibrated as a loop, the test points, reference readings, errors and measurement uncertainty, with traceability to national standards. RTD and thermocouple calibration is performed within the laboratory's NABL scope where applicable; ask us for the current scope for your temperature range.

Sensors can be sent to our Salem laboratory or calibrated at your site where portable reference equipment is suitable. See our onsite calibration services.

Frequently asked questions

It is the comparison of a sensor's reading with a calibrated reference thermometer at stable test temperatures, giving the error and uncertainty at each point.
Yes. Loop calibration covers the sensor plus indicator, controller or transmitter, giving the total displayed error.
Commonly every six to twelve months, more often for high-temperature thermocouples, and before and after validation studies.
Many sensors can be checked on-site with a portable dry block calibrator. Wider ranges or tighter uncertainty may need laboratory calibration.
It is performed within the laboratory's NABL scope where applicable. Ask us for the scope covering your sensors and range.
