Vanavil Calibrations

Lux level measurement and noise level testing for controlled areas

Good light and controlled noise are part of a safe, productive cleanroom or theatre. We measure illumination and sound levels with calibrated meters so you know your working conditions meet design and comfort requirements.

Lux level measurement checks the illumination at working surfaces and across a room using a calibrated lux meter, while noise level testing measures sound levels with a calibrated sound level meter. Vanavil Calibrations performs both tests for cleanrooms, operation theatres and laboratories across Tamil Nadu as part of validation and certification.

Comfort parameters that affect quality

Lighting and noise are sometimes treated as minor parameters, but they directly affect the people working in controlled areas. Poor lighting increases the risk of errors during inspection, assembly and surgery. Excessive noise from air handling equipment adds fatigue and makes communication harder.

Lux measurement is carried out at working height across a grid of points, with extra readings at critical work surfaces such as operating tables, inspection benches and filling lines. Results are compared with design values or applicable guidance for the type of work.

Noise measurement is taken at representative positions with the HVAC system running normally. Elevated readings often point to worn fans, unbalanced dampers or high air velocities at diffusers, which can be investigated alongside HVAC validation.

Both tests are commonly included in operation theatre validation and clean room certification, giving a complete record of working conditions.

Getting illumination right

Light levels can fall over time as fittings age, lenses discolour and lamps degrade. Periodic lux measurement shows whether lighting still meets requirements and helps plan replacements. Measuring uniformity, not just average levels, reveals dark spots that affect specific workstations.

In cleanrooms, light fittings are also part of the room's sealing. During testing we note any fittings that appear damaged or poorly sealed, as these can affect pressure and cleanliness.

Understanding noise sources

Most noise in controlled areas comes from the air handling system. Fans, dampers, ductwork and high-velocity diffusers all contribute. A sudden increase in noise often signals a mechanical problem, such as a worn bearing or loose component, that should be checked before it fails.

Recording noise levels at each validation builds a history that helps maintenance teams spot changes early. Read our noise level testing guide for more detail.

Preparing for lux and noise testing

Switch on all normal lighting and run the HVAC system in its usual mode before testing. Remove temporary obstructions from work surfaces, and let us know which positions are most critical for your staff, such as operating tables, inspection benches or filling lines, so they are included in the measurement plan.

Results are most useful when compared over time, so we record positions consistently for future visits.
