Water bath calibration services for clinical, research and QC laboratories

Multi-location temperature calibration of serological, shaking and circulating water baths, showing controller accuracy, uniformity and stability at your working temperatures.

Water bath calibration services measure the bath liquid temperature at several locations with calibrated probes and a data logger, and compare the results with the controller display. The report shows display error, water bath temperature uniformity across the tank and stability over the test period at each set point.

What water bath calibration services involve

Water baths are used for incubating samples, thawing, enzyme reactions, dissolution and many routine QC methods. Results depend on the liquid being at the intended temperature where the tubes or flasks actually sit. Water bath calibration services check this directly instead of relying on the built-in display or a dial thermometer.

Calibrated probes are placed at several locations, typically the corners and centre of the working area at a consistent depth. Larger or deeper baths may also be checked at two depths. The bath runs at the set point until stable, and readings are logged at a fixed interval to capture both spread between positions and variation over time.

Laboratory water bath calibration is done at the temperatures you use, for example near body temperature for clinical work or higher values for specific methods. Probes and loggers are traceable, as described under temperature calibration, and the visit can be combined with other laboratory equipment calibration.

Why water bath temperature uniformity matters

Method accuracy

Many assays specify a tight temperature window. A bath running warm or cool at one end can affect results in that position.

Hidden gradients

Without circulation, or with a low liquid level, the tank can show gradients that the display does not reveal.

Audit evidence

ISO 15189, ISO/IEC 17025 and GMP audits expect traceable evidence that temperature-controlled equipment performs as stated.

Checks in water bath calibration services

  • Controller display versus measured liquid temperature
  • Uniformity across multiple tank locations
  • Stability over the logging period
  • Depth difference in deep baths
  • Heat-up behaviour to set point
  • Circulation or shaking function
  • Over-temperature protection where accessible
  • Liquid level and lid condition

How laboratory water bath calibration is done

The bath is filled to its normal working level with the liquid you use, and the lid is fitted as in routine work. Probes are fixed in position so they do not touch the tank walls or heater. After the bath stabilises, readings are logged for an agreed period and summarised as mean, minimum and maximum for each location.

Results are recorded as found. If the controller offset is adjusted, the test is repeated and recorded as left. The difference between the warmest and coolest location gives the uniformity figure, and the variation at each location over time gives stability. Both can be compared with your method or manufacturer limits.

Water bath calibration services are carried out on-site, since moving a filled bath is impractical. References are traceable to national standards, and work is performed within the laboratory's NABL scope where applicable; ask for the scope when booking.

How often water bath calibration services are needed

Annual calibration is common for routine water baths. Baths used for critical methods, accredited tests or validation work may need six-monthly checks under your quality policy. Recalibrate after heater, sensor or controller replacement.

Between visits, keep the liquid level correct, use distilled or deionised water, clean regularly to prevent scale and growth, and check the bath daily with a calibrated thermometer. That thermometer can be calibrated during the same visit.

Each report includes probe positions, set points, readings, uniformity and stability results, reference equipment, environmental conditions and remarks for your records.

Keep each certificate with the equipment record, enter the next due date in your maintenance schedule and show both to auditors when asked. We keep a record of due dates for every client and can send a reminder before the next visit is needed, so nothing slips out of calibration between audits.
