Electrosurgical unit calibration services for operation theatres

Output power, RF leakage and return electrode monitoring verified on monopolar and bipolar diathermy units with a calibrated ESU analyser, inside your theatre complex.

Electrosurgical unit calibration services measure the RF power a diathermy unit delivers in each cut and coagulation mode into defined test loads, using a calibrated ESU analyser, and compare it with the displayed setting. The visit also checks high-frequency leakage, return electrode monitoring alarms and in-service electrical safety to IEC 62353.

What electrosurgical unit calibration services include

An electrosurgical unit converts mains power into high-frequency current to cut and coagulate tissue. Output stages age, internal feedback circuits drift and accessories wear. A unit can still produce an effect at the tip while delivering more or less power than the surgeon has selected.

ESU calibration uses an ESU analyser with selectable load resistances. We activate each mode at several power settings, measure the delivered power, and record power against load resistance to check that the output curve follows the manufacturer's specification.

Diathermy calibration also covers RF leakage, which is unwanted current that can cause burns away from the active site, and the return electrode monitoring system that should alarm when the patient plate loses good contact. ESU testing fits within your medical equipment calibration schedule.

Why diathermy calibration matters

Predictable effect

Surgeons set power by experience. A unit that delivers more or less than displayed changes tissue effect and thermal spread.

Burn prevention

Excess RF leakage and a failed return electrode alarm are recognised causes of unintended burns. Both are tested every visit.

Theatre compliance

Accreditation and infection control reviews often include theatre equipment records. A current ESU certificate is part of that file.

Parameters checked in ESU calibration

  • Monopolar cut output power at low, mid and high settings
  • Monopolar coagulation modes, including blend and spray where available
  • Bipolar output power into the specified load
  • Power versus load resistance curve
  • High-frequency (RF) leakage from active and neutral electrodes
  • Return electrode monitoring (REM / contact quality) alarm
  • Activation tones, footswitch and handpiece function
  • Electrical safety per IEC 62353: protective earth and leakage currents

Where ESUs are used and tested

  • General surgery OTs
  • Gynaecology and obstetrics
  • Urology
  • ENT theatres
  • Orthopaedics
  • Laparoscopy suites
  • Day-care surgery
  • Dermatology procedure rooms

How often electrosurgical unit calibration services are needed

Hospitals commonly schedule electrosurgical unit calibration services once a year, together with the manufacturer's preventive maintenance. Busy general surgery and laparoscopy theatres may justify closer checks.

Test again after any repair, board replacement, fall or liquid spill, and whenever surgeons report unusual cutting, sticking or alarms. Damaged cables, handpieces and patient plates should be replaced rather than tested repeatedly.

Units of different ages often sit side by side in a theatre complex. A consistent test method lets your biomedical team compare them fairly and plan replacements.

Keep each certificate with the equipment record, enter the next due date in your maintenance schedule and show both to auditors when asked. We keep a record of due dates for every client and can send a reminder before the next visit is needed, so nothing slips out of calibration between audits.

On-site electrosurgical unit calibration services in Tamil Nadu

ESUs are tested inside your theatre complex between lists, so there is no transport risk and no lost theatre time. We coordinate the order of rooms with theatre staff.

We serve hospitals in Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and nearby districts. For the wider theatre, see anesthesia machine calibration, OT validation and our hospital calibration services.

Certificates record unit details, analyser used, set and measured power in each mode, leakage results and measurement uncertainty, issued within the laboratory's NABL scope where applicable.

Many ESU problems start in the accessories: cracked handpiece insulation, worn footswitch cables and reused single-use plates. We inspect these during each test and note any that should be replaced.

Theatres often add patient monitor calibration and defibrillator calibration to the same visit, so every critical device in the room shares one calibration cycle.

Frequently asked questions

Output power in each cut, coag and bipolar mode, power against load, RF leakage, return electrode alarm, activation functions and IEC 62353 electrical safety.
Annually is common practice, with extra testing after repair or whenever surgeons report unusual performance.
No. We bring a portable ESU analyser and test the unit inside your theatre complex.
Yes. Diathermy and electrosurgical unit are two names for the same equipment, and the test method is the same.
Certificates are traceable to national standards and issued within the laboratory's NABL scope where applicable. Ask for the current scope.
