Cleanroom recovery test to measure how fast your room cleans itself

Every cleanroom gets disturbed: doors open, people move, equipment starts. The recovery test measures how quickly the room returns to its clean state afterwards, a direct measure of how well its air system is working.

A cleanroom recovery test measures the time it takes for airborne particle concentration in a cleanroom to fall back to a target level after a controlled particle challenge. Vanavil Calibrations performs recovery tests for pharmaceutical cleanrooms, operation theatres, laboratories and industrial cleanrooms across Tamil Nadu.

What the recovery test shows

A cleanroom is not clean because no particles are ever generated inside it; it is clean because its air system removes particles quickly. Recovery testing puts that ability to the test by deliberately raising particle levels and timing how fast they fall.

In a typical test, a particle generator raises the concentration at a chosen location well above the room's normal level. The generator is then switched off and a calibrated particle counter records the falling concentration until it reaches the target, often a fixed reduction from the starting level. The elapsed time is the recovery time.

Recovery time depends on air changes, the position of supply and return grilles, room layout and airflow patterns. A slow recovery points to low air volumes, poor air distribution or obstructions, even when routine particle counts look acceptable.

Recovery testing is usually part of clean room certification and is interpreted alongside airflow and ACPH testing.

What affects recovery time

Higher air change rates generally shorten recovery, but distribution matters as much as volume. A room with plenty of supply air can still recover slowly if supply and return positions create short-circuits or dead zones, or if large equipment blocks airflow.

Comparing recovery results at different points in the room shows where the air system works well and where it struggles. Repeating the test after HVAC adjustments confirms whether changes improved performance. Learn more in our recovery test guide.

When recovery testing is needed

Recovery testing is usually performed at commissioning and qualification, during periodic certification, and after changes to the HVAC system, room layout or major equipment. Facilities with critical aseptic processes may include it in every certification cycle.

Testing at the same locations each time builds a useful history. A gradual increase in recovery time over successive tests is an early sign of filter loading or fan performance drift.

Preparing for a recovery test

Before testing, confirm the HVAC system is running in its normal mode, doors are closed and the room is clean. Agree the test locations and acceptance criteria in advance, and make sure no activity disturbs the room during the measurement period, so recovery reflects the air system rather than outside influences.

Frequently asked questions

Acceptance criteria depend on the room's class, design and your quality requirements. We test against the criteria defined for your facility.
A particle generator produces a controlled aerosol to raise the concentration at the test point, then is switched off to start the recovery measurement.
We use aerosols suitable for cleanroom testing and agree the method with your team in advance.
Many hospitals include recovery testing in OT validation as a measure of how well the theatre clears airborne particles.
Particle counts show the room at one moment. Recovery shows how robustly it returns to that state after disturbances.
Each location typically takes a short time, depending on the room's performance. We plan the schedule in advance.
