ETO sterilizer calibration for hospital CSSD and medical device plants

Calibration of the temperature, pressure, vacuum, humidity and timing instruments that control ethylene oxide sterilization cycles, with traceable reports.

ETO sterilizer calibration checks the measuring instruments on an ethylene oxide sterilizer, such as chamber temperature sensors, pressure and vacuum gauges or transducers, humidity sensors and cycle timers, against calibrated reference standards. It confirms that the cycle parameters shown and recorded by the sterilizer reflect the real conditions in the chamber.

What ETO sterilizer calibration covers

Ethylene oxide sterilization is used for heat and moisture sensitive devices that cannot go through a steam autoclave. Its effectiveness depends on gas concentration, temperature, relative humidity, pressure and exposure time. If any instrument reading these parameters is wrong, the printed cycle record can look correct while the load was not processed as intended.

ETO sterilizer calibration gives the error of each instrument at its working points. Our engineers work on-site with portable reference standards and follow the site's safety procedures, as ethylene oxide is toxic and flammable. Calibration is carried out only with the chamber safely aerated and under the control of the site's trained operators.

Related services include autoclave validation, pressure calibration and RTD and thermocouple calibration.

Why ethylene oxide sterilizer calibration matters

Sterility assurance

Cycle parameters are the evidence that a load was sterilised. Calibrated instruments make that evidence trustworthy.

Validation basis

ETO sterilizer validation studies rely on calibrated sensors on the machine and in the load.

Regulatory records

Hospital accreditation, medical device quality systems and GMP audits expect calibration records for sterilizer instruments.

How ETO sterilizer calibration is performed

Temperature channels are checked by placing a calibrated reference probe next to the sterilizer sensor, or by removing the sensor and comparing it in a dry block calibrator, depending on design and access. Pressure and vacuum channels are compared with a calibrated digital pressure standard at points across the operating range, including the vacuum levels used in the cycle.

Humidity sensors are compared with a calibrated reference where the design allows access. Timers are checked against a calibrated stopwatch. Each channel's error and uncertainty are recorded, along with as-found and, where the manufacturer's engineer adjusts, as-left results.

ETO sterilizer calibration and ETO sterilizer validation

Calibration and validation are different steps. Calibration confirms each instrument reads correctly. ETO sterilizer validation, typically following ISO 11135 for ethylene oxide sterilization of health care products, shows that a defined cycle consistently delivers the required sterility assurance for a specified load.

Validation usually includes installation and operational qualification, temperature and humidity distribution studies with calibrated loggers, and performance qualification with biological indicators. Residual ethylene oxide limits and aeration are handled under the relevant device standards.

We support the measurement side of this work, with calibrated sensors and data loggers. Microbiological testing of biological indicators is performed by a suitable microbiology laboratory.

Frequency and certificates

ETO sterilizer calibration is commonly done at least once a year and after major repair, sensor replacement or relocation, or as your validation protocol requires. Certificates list each channel, test points, reference readings, errors, uncertainty and traceability.

Work is carried out within the laboratory's NABL scope where applicable; ask us for the current scope for the temperature and pressure ranges involved.

Keep each certificate with the equipment record, enter the next due date in your maintenance schedule and show both to auditors when asked. We keep a record of due dates for every client and can send a reminder before the next visit is needed, so nothing slips out of calibration between audits.
