EEG machine calibration and EMG calibration for neurology departments

Amplifier gain, filters, noise, impedance measurement and stimulator output verified on EEG, EMG and nerve conduction systems using calibrated signal sources, at your hospital.

EEG machine calibration verifies that each recording channel amplifies a known microvolt-level signal correctly, that filters and the notch filter behave as set, and that noise and electrode impedance readings are accurate, using a calibrated signal simulator. EMG calibration adds checks on stimulator current and pulse width. Both include in-service electrical safety testing to IEC 62353.

What EEG machine calibration involves

EEG and EMG systems record very small biological signals, in the microvolt to millivolt range. Small errors in gain, filter settings or channel matching change amplitude measurements and the appearance of waveforms, and rising noise can hide genuine activity.

EEG calibration feeds a calibrated signal of known amplitude and frequency into each channel through the electrode inputs. We compare the displayed amplitude and frequency with the reference, check high-pass, low-pass and 50 Hz notch filters, measure baseline noise with inputs shorted, and test the built-in impedance meter against reference resistors.

EMG calibration covers the same amplifier checks plus the electrical stimulator used for nerve conduction studies. Neurology equipment is covered within our wider medical equipment calibration service.

Why EEG calibration and EMG calibration matter

Amplitude accuracy

Reports often quote amplitudes. Correct gain on every channel keeps those numbers meaningful and comparable between studies.

Channel matching

Asymmetry between hemispheres is clinically important. Channels must match each other so that differences are real, not instrumental.

Stimulus control

In nerve conduction studies the stimulator must deliver the current and pulse width shown. Measured output confirms it.

Parameters checked in EEG machine calibration and EMG calibration

  • Amplifier gain / sensitivity on every channel using a calibrated signal
  • Channel-to-channel matching
  • High-pass, low-pass and 50 Hz notch filter response
  • Baseline noise with shorted inputs
  • Electrode impedance meter accuracy against reference resistors
  • Display time base and photic stimulator rate on EEG systems
  • EMG / NCS stimulator current and pulse width into a test load
  • Electrical safety per IEC 62353, including applied part leakage

EMG calibration for nerve conduction and evoked potential systems

EMG and nerve conduction systems combine sensitive amplifiers with a stimulator. We check amplifier gain and filters as for EEG, then measure stimulator output current and pulse duration into a defined test load at several settings.

Where the system supports evoked potentials, averaging and trigger timing can be checked with a calibrated signal source. Results are compared with the manufacturer's specification.

Accessories such as stimulating probes, ground electrodes and cables are inspected for damage, since they are a common source of noise and inconsistent results.

How often EEG machine calibration is scheduled

Most hospitals schedule EEG machine calibration and EMG calibration once a year, alongside the manufacturer's preventive maintenance and the daily calibration routine many systems run on start-up.

Recalibrate after repairs, headbox or amplifier replacement, software upgrades, relocation, or whenever technologists notice unusual noise or asymmetry that disappears when the patient is changed. The biomedical team sets the final interval.

Keep each certificate with the equipment record, enter the next due date in your maintenance schedule and show both to auditors when asked. We keep a record of due dates for every client and can send a reminder before the next visit is needed, so nothing slips out of calibration between audits.

Frequently asked questions

Gain on each channel, channel matching, filters including the 50 Hz notch, baseline noise, impedance meter accuracy, time base, photic stimulator rate and IEC 62353 electrical safety.
Annually is common practice, in addition to the system's start-up calibration routine, and again after repair or upgrades.
Yes. The built-in routine uses the system's own internal signal. External calibration uses an independent, traceable signal source.
Stimulator current and pulse width checks into a test load, plus amplifier and filter checks on EMG channels.
Certificates are traceable to national standards and issued within the laboratory's NABL scope where applicable. Ask for the current scope.
